Yesterday morning, "Songs from the moon" played a strange but nice show at 5AM. We did slowed down ambient/noise-y versions of a lot of newer songs we've been working on and played a few more straight forward [but still slow] versions of already learned songs to close up the show.
What's that you ask?
Why did we book a show that early in the morning/late in the night?
The Assembly Line concert, of course. For the past few years AJ's Cafe in Ferndale has been breaking the world record for longest concert.
I can't remember the exact number of hours each year has been [and am too lazy right now to look it up] but I think last year was 280[?] hours of straight live music and this year is 380[?]
Anyhow, they have been putting the whole thing up on ustream, so anytime in the next few weeks you feel like watching live music on your internet box, click here to see it live.

Our next show at this same concert is April 2nd from 1PM-2PM.

Ladies and Gents... Morris Leifer: Producer (among other things)
I've been hard at work with all sorts of odds and ends.
Some seem promising, some are silly, and some are just odds and/or ends.

First off.
Dr. Morris Leifer, [aka Shaun Wisniewski] is putting together an instrumental weirdo-rap/electronic album. I've been making drum beats when I'm bored on computer programs for years now... since before I started the Matilda project in 2003, in fact. So I guess this album has been on my mind for quite some time.
Don't get excited.
Just because I've been making rap beats and electronic music for years doesn't mean I'm good at it. I just like to make it. And in all honesty, it's hard for me to judge it considering I have to hear every little part of each song over and over and over again while I'm making it.
It's like, when you say a word multiple times in a row, it ends up losing meaning [marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow, marrow]
Same idea goes for the strange rap-esque songs.
Anyways.
I made a Bandcamp for the songs.
The album is going to be called Romance Novels.

The songs that are posted on the Leifer Bandcamp now are still evolving... I'll post it up on the blog again when the album is done. I wanted to put some things up, like an un-mixed preview. Then let those songs sit, then work on other Leifer songs while the first group exits my head, and come back to the first batch, post the second batch, and repeat... Like I said, it gets hard to hear the same loops over and over again without them becoming aural nothingness.
And this way, you guys can see the first versions evolve into the second versions... Hear what changed, and what stayed the same. Etc.

Second:
My other, other project [Songs from the moon] is going strong. We're playing a couple of shows at AJs cafe in Ferndale in the near future. One of them is going to be an ambient/noise show at 5AM and the other will be a more traditional full band, piano based, folk/rock, percussion heavy, song writer songs. Click the above link for more information on that, and all thing Songs from the moon related. We are also planning on playing an acoustic show, and more big full band shows in the not as near future.

Thirdly, -or -Next on the list:
I have plans to make a Matilda split cassette tape with Jon Berz [ex-Blase Splee, current Songs from the moon]. I've made tapes in the past, but never as a end-game product. Always as a "I have all these ideas I need to get down on something and all I have is this old hand held voice recorder from the 90's."
A lot of my first recordings were done on tape. I love the woozy feel. The warm up when you press play. The slow stretch. The occasional strange gaps in parts of noise that happen over time.
It's going to be good.
We're thinking of two or three songs per each tape side. One side would be a couple new Matilda songs and the other side would be a few new songs from Jon. But, the cool thing is, is we're going to help one another record and play on all the songs together. So Jon will be filling out the sounds of the Matilda stuff, and vice versa.

My good buddy Danny has been working on a home-made synthesizer for a while now. And when I say "working on," I mean he's building this mother-fucker from scratch. Well, the first incarnation of it is finally done and he's left it with me and my fiance to do some art work on the box. Can't wait to turn his project into something he can't stand to look at. [wink]
This is what it looks/sounds like.
Pretty neat.
The coming days/months should be interesting.
Here's to new work.

Songs from the moon...
Hello Internet.
A bit of news from the underground, if you will.
Me and Matilda have recently been playing with Jon Berz and Co. in a project called Songs from the moon.

We play our first show as a band tonight at the Lager House in Corktown (down the street from the old Tiger Stadium)
Other shows on the horizon include 2 appearances at the assembly line concert:

03.20.11 at AJ's Cafe (5am)
And some other dates/places that I don't think I can talk about yet...

Also:
The Matilda triple album Sounds was released on Christmas... (You should know that if you read this blog) But I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has downloaded them, streamed them, talked to me about them, etc. I'm pretty happy with them, considering they were just half finished songs that have been sitting around for a few years.
I'm nearly done writing my new album.
Have 10-12 brand new songs ready to hit the recording gauntlet. Most of them are about sex, regrets, staying in, childhood, ignorance and arrogance.
And if you didn't know, I recently moved into a new house. Which means I have a space to set up a little home studio of my own.
Pretty excited to start setting up my basement for recording and to get everything started.

Snow Days and Warm Ups
Above is the "warm up" video from the house show we played last summer. This isn't a song per se, we were just playing some improv stuff so the kids would know we were ready to start the show.
The most memorable part of the show was how hot it was in that basement... That and the fact that half of everyone there was too busy trying to sleep with someone [read: anyone, or anything] else to watch music being performed.
Anyway. Things have slowed a bit with Danny and me and Matilda now that the snow has come. We no longer live in the same city, let alone the same house, so we haven't practiced in a while. He's busy with the other bands he's in, and I've been writing material for a new Matilda record. I'm also in the staring stages of a few other projects I have in the works.
Probably around Christmas I'm going to release 3 new Matilda albums. The last album I put out was a re-working of an old album, then a cover record before that, so, there hasn't been any new original music in over 2 years... And it's not because I haven't been working on it. I just haven't felt like anything was finished. And now that I've been formulating another record, and I'm close to having it all written and figured out, this giant pool of unfinished songs needs to be released before I start recording the new, new album.
Initially I was going to just release all of the songs together as a "b-side" comp or something, but they're not b-sides, they're a part of something that is unfinished. Unfinished as an album, or even some are unfinished as a song. So I think that I'm going to release them as separate albums, but put them in a different category, or maybe sub-label them... Like, "From the Sounds Collection: 2009 Clawson Apartment Songs" - or something like that.
As soon as I post them up, I'll post a link up here, as well as just about everywhere else.
If anything else exciting happens, I'll let you know. Lately, it's been pretty uneventful in the land of Mathilda, but I hope to change that soon.
I'm also thinking about looking into a label, if anyone has any ideas, send me an e-mail.

We're still practicing and playing and planning, I just haven't been updating the blog...
